Is Soak’s Scentless Wash Really Scentless?

Soak Scentless Single Serving Packet
Soak Scentless Single Serving Packet

The fast answer — yes it is!

I received a single serving packet of Soak Scentless Wash with my Yarnbox subscription.

I wanted to try it out since I am usually very sensitive to strong smells. Even some “scentless” products that use a scent to get rid of whatever chemical they are trying to cover up will make me sneeze.

I was already a fan of Soak’s product. They are my go to blocking wash. So I knew this would work well, and I wasn’t disappointed.

Once this was put in the water I was going to block with, I couldn’t make out any smell at all.

It was truly scentless.

I imagine this will be a great product for anyone with sensitive skin as well.

Has anyone else given this a try? If you have sensitive skin, let us know what you think below.

You can check out a video of me trying out the soak on a project below as well.

Yarnbox June 2014 Reveal

What's inside?
What’s inside?

The newest Yarnbox has arrived. Read on to see what is inside!

So many colors!
So many colors!

I received a whopping three hanks of fun this month! Along with a fabulous crochet pattern and super cute knit cowl pattern. See the details and value below.

Designer Trading Cards

New feature this month.
New feature this month.

Not only did we get two fabulous patterns as always, but this month Yarnbox has a new feature.

They are now also including a stitch pattern they say works fantastically with the yarn they have sent. Unfortunately it’s a knit stitch pattern so I’ll have to take their word for it, but it is a cute stitch pattern for you bi-craftuals out there.

Our knit designer this month is Iris Schreier and she has provided her Wavy Shawl as a free pattern as well as 15% off in the Art Yarns pattern shop. ($4 value for the cowl)

The crochet designer is ACCROchet and her Ski Bunny pattern is super cute and free! She also gives us 30% off in her Rav shop. ($5 value for the hat)

Use together or apart.

The first two hanks are Art Yarns Supermerino ($20 each hank value)

The 100% super soft merino wool has 208 yards per hank. The two hanks have a coordinating color between them (see it better in the video below) which can make for a very cool project. Or keep them separate and make two super cool projects.

So beautiful!!!
So beautiful!!!

The third hank is probably the most beautiful yarn I’ve ever touched. It is Artyarns Beaded Silk Sequins Light. ($24 value approx.*)

It’s a 100% silk that has Murano glass beads and Sequins dispersed throughout. As you can see from the picture, they don’t skimp on the beads. It is so beautiful I can’t wait to make something out of it.

*I say approx. value because this is a kind of “sample” hank. It contains 40 yards (plenty for what I’m thinking of using it for), and the regular size hank contains 110 to 160 yards depending on where you purchase it.

This month’s yarnbox is a beautiful mix of fibers that I am so thankful I get to work with. Plus the value of items inside far outweighs the price. So another successful month!

See more of the yarn in the video reveal below.

Winner Winner Chicken Dinner

The winner of the Phydeaux hank is Carol D. with this comment:

I can’t pass up BLUE! I love color, period! Sometimes I’m in the mood for bright, bold colors. But I also really like items crocheted in more subtle pastels.

Congrats Carol!

Don’t worry if you didn’t win. I have tons of more giveaways coming up. So be sure to follow the blog to get instant notification when the next on is up.

Crochet With A Broomstick?

A viewer requested a broomstick lace tutorial.

I forgot how much I love this stitch and I need to use it more often.

The broomstick lace stitch is a very unique crochet stitch. It’s called broomstick because it’s thought in the old days, actual broomsticks were used to make the loops of this stitch.

The video tutorial below will show you how to work the loops onto your “stick” (which in my case, is a knitting needle) and how to work them back off. I also go into how to change up the loop count when following a pattern.

I will be adding a free pattern workshop very soon for a whole project out of broomstick so if you’ve never tried it, now is the time to get familiar with it.

Be sure to subscribe to the blog if you want notice as soon as the project is added.

Also here is a link if you like the knitting needle I’m using for the stitch and want to pick one up since this is what I will be using for the free project coming up.

Nintendo Just Made My Millennium

It's A Wooly, Wooly World
It’s A Wooly, Wooly World

My daughter has already started her Christmas list, and at the top of the list is the Wii U and Super Mario 3D world. I now am adding to that list for myself, the newest game announced by Nintendo — Yoshi’s Woolly World.

Your eye’s do not deceive you, it is a crochet and knit world of wonder!

I was leery of the Wii U with its lackluster reviews, but was considering it because my daughter really wanted “cat Mario” (a form of Mario that can climb walls like a cat in the 3D world game).

But now that I’ve seen the trailer (below) for Yoshi’s Woolly World, I must have it!

Imagine a world made up of knit mountains and crochet crystals, where hanks of yarn hang like stalagtites and rainbows are held up with knitting needles. This is Yoshi’s newest world and I want to live in it. I obviously missed out on my dream job of consulting on this game made up of entirely knit and crochet, but I can still play it.

The pictures alone were enough to sell me, but then I watched the video game trailer and I couldn’t stop laughing. Yoshi actually eats his enemies and poops out yarn balls. He can frog a hole in a wall by pulling on a errant tail and take out a whole group of enemies with a knit ball.

Even if you never plan on owning a Wii U, I highly recommend you watch the trailer just to see the incredible imagination of the gamers who made it. It won’t be out until early 2015 so there is plenty of time to change your mind. 🙂 Check out some more images of Yoshi’s world while you’re at it.

Do you have a Wii U? How do you like the console and do you think you would buy this new game? Let us know what you think below.

Soothing Extra:

The soothing extra this month is a Handmaid Hand Cream by Soak. ($10 value)

  • Shea butter, olive oil, and vitamins A and E team up to nourish skin.
  • Has a sea breeze scent of Aquae
  • I’m usually very sneezy around strong scents (can’t go into a Bath and Body Works), but the Soak brand hand lotion is mild enough to not make me sneeze, but strong enough to keep the scent around for hours. I’m really loving it!
My favorite LYS (local yarn store) brand!!!
My favorite LYS (local yarn store) brand!!!

The Yarn:

I lucked out more than ever this month on my Knitcrate. I received three hanks of Malabrigo Worsted Weight Yarn. ($36 value)

  • Malabrigo is my favorite yarn store brand. It is the softest 100% merino wool with the most intense color palette. Just look at the apple green in the middle!
  • Plus it is very reasonably priced (for an independent yarn company). Each 210 yard hank is only $12 each. Which if you visit any local yarn stores regularly you will know that most independent yarns can run much more than that.
  • For special gifts that require a beautiful yarn, this is my go to brand. However, I think I will be making something for myself this time.

The Giveaway:

So I will be giving away the pattern pack and stitch markers to one reader (US residents only — sorry). To enter, leave a comment below on your favorite yarn brand.

Entries close June 30th midnight Pacific time. The winner will be announced July 1st, 2014.

Here is my newest free pattern to share with everyone.

These arm warmers are great for a man or woman. I made these out of some of my yarn subscription yarn and it didn’t even take a whole hank.

Enter your email address to follow this blog and receive notifications of new posts by email.

But back to the pattern.

This is a very easy one stitch repeat. The video tutorial will also show you a trick on how to keep your arm warmers the same size in case you are anything like me and are constantly making one smaller than the other.

I also did a review of the yarn I used so you can check out that video below and get a sneak peek of what you can win.
